JASMINE THOMAS
Jasmine Thomas was born and raised by Johnnie and Sharon Thomas in Fairfax, Virginia and has one sibling, her older brother, Darrell Thomas. As a young child, she enjoyed reading, playing board games with her family, rollerblading and traveling to support Darrell at his AAU and high school games. Back then, she was just one of the many small siblings running around the gym while the games were being played.
It wasn't until age 9 that Jasmine began her basketball career at James Lee Community Center (JLCC) in Annandale, VA. Her father quickly recognized that his young daughter was very athletic and had a knack for the game. Eager for her to develop, he reached out and found the Fairfax Stars organization, an AAU program for girls and boys. Jasmine played her entire amateur basketball career with that one program. It was during her AAU basketball experience that Jasmine realized she wanted to wholeheartedly pursue success in the sport at every level.
She attended The Langley School in McLean, Virginia where she was able to dominate the middle school league. She went on to play high school basketball for Oakton High School in Vienna, Virginia where she accumulated many championships and accolades. Her standout high school performances got her invited to elite camps and resulted in her being a WBCA and McDonald All-American in 2007. She went on to attend Duke University where she majored in Sociology and received a certificate in Markets and Management studies. She had a terrific academic and athletic career at Duke that led to many accolades in both fields. A month before graduating, Jasmine was selected as the 12th overall pick in the 2011 WNBA draft to the Seattle Storm.
Shortly after the draft, she was traded to the Washington Mystics where she is still currently playing. Her first two WNBA seasons with the Mystics have not been winning seasons and have been quite a humbling and learning experience. She has been faced with challenges of consistency, adjusting to her role, and losing. Nonetheless, Jasmine continues to enjoy living out her dream. She aspires not only to be a great professional player but also to win championships and to be a WNBA All-Star.
